MARY
Mary was in her late 20's. She was a victim of sexual abuse and rape, had a history of subsequent eating disorders and alcohol abuse. She was in abusive relationships, had made suicide attempts and was taking anti-depressants. Mary then became pregnant and it was discovered she had a blood clotting disorder. Because of her physical, mental, and relationship conditions the medical advice was to have an abortion ? an elective termination of pregnancy. To prevent Mary from becoming pregnant again the surgeons sterilized her on the same day as the abortion. Mary started grieving the loss of her child and her motherhood. The doctors just explained again that she made the correct choice. No one wanted to hear her pain! Her past came back to haunt her. Her current relationship with the father of the baby ended, alcohol was again her friend, she lost her job, anorexia was her only sense of control, and suicide became a viable option once more.
MARIA
Maria, a young mother, came bopping into the office for her first obstetric appointment. She was eight months pregnant. During Maria's examination, it was discovered that she was infected with HPV. HPV is a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease increasingly linked to cervical cancer. The Human Papilloma Virus may cause warts, which appear to look like cauliflower. Maria had these warts. The HPV warts filled the birth canal and made a vaginal birth impossible. She was scheduled for a c-section, subsequent laser treatment for the infection, and cervical biopsy. Maria was devastated to learn that she may be a new mom with two children and be fighting cancer. This is SCARY for any woman - imagine Maria's fright - she is 14.... Where is the hope?
We think Mary, Maria, and others like her are worthy of help. If you are interested in teaming with us through a donation, your money will help restore these people by keeping our critical programs vital and dynamic. There are many, many more like Mary and Maria - both women and men.
